What makes medium Sudoku different

Medium Sudoku has a lower clue target than Easy, so candidate pencil-marks become more useful. Pair-based patterns may appear, but a specific technique is not guaranteed on every generated board.

Most players settle into Medium as their daily difficulty. It's challenging enough to feel like progress, gentle enough to finish reliably in five to eight minutes with a coffee. Clue counts are 30–34, which is where the board stops being scannable and starts requiring proper technique.

Medium is also where a beginner who has grown out of Easy first sees that Sudoku is a game of eliminating candidates, not of finding digits. That perspective shift — from 'where does 5 go?' to 'what are this cell's candidates?' — is the door to every harder level.

Techniques you'll actually use

These are useful techniques to study for medium sudoku boards, but the current difficulty label does not guarantee a specific solving path:

• Hidden Single — Still the workhorse — most cells are placed via Hidden Single, especially early on.
• Naked Pair — Two cells in the same unit that both have exactly the same two candidates. Trim those two digits from every other cell in the unit.

Three tips that make medium boards click

1. Do a full candidate scan once, then trust the pencil-marks. Half-marking is worse than not marking at all.
2. If you're stuck, verify the candidate grid before looking for pairs or more advanced patterns.
3. After every placement, immediately erase that digit from all peers (same row, column, and box). That habit alone shaves half a minute off every solve.

Sudoku difficulty is a continuum, not a step-function. If you're stalling on medium boards, the fix is almost never "try harder" — it's to go back one rung and solidify the technique below.
